Single ascospore progeny were grown and selected from isolated ascospores from carefully selected wild specimens from the Appalachian mountains/foothills. I am constantly refining my selection process and developing better genetics, as well as testing new home isolates collected from my best crosses. I ship the first 5 strains for 5 packs, 3 packs or a pack of liquid culture.

Primary syringes should be refrigerated upon receipt to maximize shelf life and fertility (3-12 months refrigerated). All LCs are batch tested before shipping. Shake before use to ensure even distribution of the mycelium in the liquid. The master can be expanded to bulk LC using 1-2 ml of liquid or whole syringe for optimal results. Extended LC should be used within 2-7 days for best results, cooling immediately after 2-5 days of dark incubation may extend this window.

If ordering during the summer in the southern US, consider overnight shipping refrigerated to ensure shelf life. I am no longer responsible for handling temperatures during summer deliveries.

Lighting: dark to complete incubation but light colonization 2-5 days, place under light 12-24 hours per day for remainder of growth cycle: 500-1500 lux.

Sediment should be expected, just stir it regularly during use. The LC calcium carbonate recipe should not be used with a stir bar as it will erode the Teflon coating and grind it to the bottom of the tube. I only shake hands once a day.

Calcium sulfate and rock powder can be substituted for more calcium carbonate if you're on a budget. You can also skip the seaweed.

If preparing stock in a jar, use a 1:1.6 ratio (grain:stock). A good amount for a quart jar is 35 g rice to 56 ml stock sterilized for 60 minutes at 15 psi. This is because the spores of this parasitic fungus have the potential to infect your brain - causing a kind of madness. As if in a trance, you'd climb into a high chair, hold on tight, and die—giving the fungus a chance to fester in your brain and spread its spores again.

Luckily, we don't have to worry about this—for to you and me, Cordyceps is a powerful medicinal mushroom that offers incredible health benefits, including increasing energy, increasing stamina, and improving your overall health.

Both anecdotal reports and strong scientific evidence suggest that compounds in the cordyceps mushroom can improve our well-being in multiple ways.

The Weird And Wonderful Cordyceps Militaris Mushroom

Like many medicinal mushrooms, Cordyceps contains beta-D-glucan which has been shown to naturally modulate the immune system and help you fight illness and disease. (1)

Cordyceps is used to enhance athletic performance and endurance by increasing the body's ability to absorb oxygen and use it more efficiently. (2) Studies have demonstrated the ability of this mushroom to increase VO2 max in athletes. This is one of the most requested Cordyceps effects.

Cordyceps is associated with increased antioxidant action, reducing the effects of oxidative processes that can have anti-aging effects. (3)

This mushroom can increase your body's supply of ATP, which is the main source of energy for your cells during exercise. It has the effect of increasing sports performance, energy and vitality. (4)

There are many anecdotal reports of Cordyceps helping people with asthma and other immune-related disorders. Studies in mice show that Cordyceps militaris is effective in reducing airway inflammation. (5)

Cordyceps is traditionally used to increase fertility and act as an impotence remedy, making it a natural aphrodisiac. This is thought to be due to the ability of Cordyceps to increase blood flow. (6)

Fungi, and the term is used to refer to a number of different species - most commonly Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris.

Cordycep Militaris

These aren't your traditional cap and stem mushrooms – and they have very unique characteristics. Known as "sac fungi" or "ascomycetes", they are related to other familiar mushrooms such as morels and truffles.

The fruiting body of Cordyceps is actually known as an 'ascocarp' - but for our purposes, we can call it a mushroom! Usually a long thin fruiting body that extends from the host, but may also take the form of a bench.

Cordyceps fungi are parasitic, meaning they need a living host which the fungus will eventually kill. The host is usually an insect or a tree or even some other fungus.

Cordyceps are found worldwide, but are most common in Asia, with the highest species density in tropical rainforests. Traditional Cordyceps Sinensis grows naturally on caterpillars high in the mountains of China.

There are hundreds of different species of Cordyceps found around the world. However, there are two main species of interest for human consumption - Cordyceps

. There's also an efficient version of Cordyceps mycelium grown in a large liquid pot known as CS-4 that's worth working with.

Cordyceps sinensis is the most well-known species, known for its powerful medicinal properties. When people use the term Cordyceps, they are often referring to sinensis.

It is commonly called a caterpillar fungus, because it uses insects as hosts before finally detaching from its head. You can clearly see the caterpillars in the sinensis assemblage pictures.

Cordycep Militaris

Cordyceps sinensis is found in Asia, nestled between the Himalayas on the Tibetan Plateau. The fruiting bodies of the mushroom have eluded successful commercial cultivation attempts and are therefore highly prized.

It's getting harder and harder to find, causing conflict in the harvesting area and rising prices

Evaluation. For example, the price has gone from about $5 per gram in the late 90's to over $72 per gram today!

The demand for additional Cordyceps is currently too high to rely on wild-harvested Cordyceps – and using mushrooms in this way is neither ecologically nor economically sustainable.

It can actually be cultivated as a way to derive the benefits of the fungus without the astronomical costs and high environmental impact of wild harvesting of fruiting bodies.

Many studies have shown that this mycelium known as Cs-4 does indeed contain the same active compounds as the fruiting bodies of wild Cordyceps - if grown properly.

There are several different ways to produce cordyceps mycelium - with the two methods producing very different results.

The best way to produce Cs-4 (really the only way to do it properly) is to grow the mycelium in a nutrient-rich liquid culture. Imagine a large fermentation tank, with strands of mycelium suspended in a liquid, growing and spreading rapidly. After the mycelium has expanded as much as possible, it is extracted from the liquid, dried and ground into a powder that is 100% pure mycelium.

Producing Cs-4 in this way ensures that the final product has a complex profile similar to that of wild fruit bodies.

Benefits Of Cordyceps, All Backed By Science

A cheaper but less efficient way to produce Cs-4 is to grow mycelium on grains, similar to seedling production as is done in commercial mushroom growing operations. Once the mycelium has colonized the grain, it is ground and dried – without first separating the mycelium from the grain!

This results in a final product that is mostly starch and not something very like pure mycelium. Of course, there will still be most of the same useful compounds as in pure mycelium, but in

Supplement manufacturers that use this method of cultivation usually do not include the actual amount of beneficial compounds on their products. You may find this if you search for "mycellated brown rice" or similar in supplement facts.

Fortunately, there is a species of Cordyceps that has a very similar complex profile to C. sinensis, known as Cordyceps militaris. In fact, these two mushrooms have historically been used interchangeably in traditional Chinese medicine.

The cultivation method does not even require the use of insects. This means that cultivated C. militaris can be considered vegan and can provide all of the same benefits as C. sinensis without the high costs or environmental impact of harvesting dwindling resources.

Recreating the actual fruiting bodies also helps determine the identity of the fungus, as Cordyceps militaris is easy to spot.

So, fair enough - Cordyceps appears to be widely used to promote health in a number of ways. But what are some concrete examples? What evidence is there to support this?

The Cordyceps mushroom is highly sought after by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, with recorded use of the mushroom going back over 500 years!
